I realize that nothing has been posted here since the end of November. I know that I said we'd start it up again with the new year. But there is too much going on in my life right now to try and maintain this. So I'm signing off for now. The pictures will stay up for anyone who wants to peruse them. There are a number of remarkably good shots in here.
Feel free to pick up where I left off, anyone with more time. It's not hard to set up a blog like this.
Sorry for the bail, but my life needs to be in order before I can try something like this again. I'm still taking pictures, not as many, but close. I only hope that you are too. Perhaps one day in the future I'll restart this thing. Until then...

The Spirit of the Challenge
Take as many pictures as you want or can in a day. Send your favorite one on that day in and I'll post it here. The goal is to take at least one good picture a day.

Voting
Send an e-mail to pictureadaychallenge@gmail.com with your favorite five pictures from the previous month in the order you would place them. Voting will start on the first of the month and finish on the third. Results and winning pictures will be shown on the fourth of each month. Only the top three will receive the Gold, Silver and Bronze.
All winning pictures will be automatically entered in the Picture of the Year contest.
One vote per e-mail address. If you share an e-mail, then it's time to get your own so you can vote too!

The Rules
1. I get to judge what appropriate content is and post accordingly. Use your common sense before you send pics. This is a family friendly site.
2. Before I post pictures of people, I need to have a signed waiver saying it's OK and legal to use their image.
3. Judging will be done in two ways...
1) Votes for 'Best Picture' by the public. (one vote per person)
2) A mystery 'guest judge' who will have a 49% vote on the final winning picture. (one mystery judge per challenge)
4. No photoshopping. Just take the picture and send it if you like it. You may turn a color shot into black & white or sepia. You may crop and adjust the lightness or darkness. Anything you could do in a good old fashioned darkroom is probably ok. Just no special effects.
5. Be honest. Don't go digging through all of your old pictures to find the best ones. The idea behind this challenge is to get out and take more pictures. If you send me a picture that you took on any other day other than the one we are all in, I won't post it. I won't even acknowledge it. I might photoshop it in some way and send it back. So play fair - remember the goal. Take more pictures TODAY!
6. One picture per person, per day. Don't send me a bunch and try and make me choose, as I will just send them all back along with a picture of every President our country has ever had (and two of William Henry Harrison as he looks particularly dour.)
7. Titles and/or captions for your pictures are ok. Stories are not.
8. Prizes will be awarded in the following catagories and judged by the criteria listed in number 3...
A) Best Picture of the Month
B) Best Picture of the Year
9. If you are not having fun, don't do it.
The Challenge will start officially on August 1, 2008 and will end promptly at midnight on July 31, 2009 (or thereabouts)
I reserve the right to amend or change the rules at any time, but will only do so for the betterment of the challenge. Any suggestions for rules should be sent to me at the e-mail listed on this site.

Addendum - Vacations
Some folks have the luxury of getting away from it all for a few days every now and then. Sometimes during these vacations it is downright hard to get to a computer to download a picture for the Picture a Day Challenge. So, in keeping with the policy of trusting the submitting photographers, a new rule is born...
If you are gone for a time and take some stellar pictures, go ahead and submit them for the day they were taken. Again, you are on the honor system, keep to the spirit of the challenge and take more pictures! I will then add them to the appropriate day.
This does not mean that if you forget to send a picture in for the day you can just save them up and send them at the end of the week. Please try to send the picture on the day that you took it. Thanks.

There will be a Gold, Silver, and Bronze prize awarded. There will be no real gold, silver or bronze distributed however.

3. The knowledge that your picture won.
4. People everywhere thinking to themselves 'Man, I wish I took pictures that good!'

Email me at pictureadaychallenge@gmail.com to sign on to the challenge. I will e-mail back a welcome letter and a waiver that has to be signed by anyone you are taking a picture of. (See 'Waiver Details' at the bottom ot the page)

Waiver Details
Due to the litigious society we live in, no pictures of people or places with logos will be published without the express written consent of the subject. Once you send me an e-mail signing on to the challenge, you will get a waiver e-mailed to you to print out. Any pictures requiring waivers that are sent in without them cannot be published. Sorry. Them's the rules. Signed waivers should preferably be scanned and e-mailed to this site. If you can't do that, contact me for other arrangements.
